You set the thermostat to 19°C. That is the standard. That is the recommendation. And yet, you are wearing a sweater indoors. You are shivering. Why does the dial say “comfort” while your body screams otherwise?
It isn’t just your imagination. The number on the wall is only half the story. Heat loss is a physical process involving surfaces, air movement, and biology. If you want warmth without blowing a hole in your energy bill, you have to look beyond the thermostat.
The Physics of Feeling Cold
Temperature is not the same as thermal comfort. Your skin does not measure air degrees in a vacuum. It measures a complex interaction of several factors. Ignore these, and 19°C will feel like 16°C.
Humidity is the invisible variable.
Dry air steals heat from your body faster than moist air. If your indoor humidity drops below 40%, the air feels colder because it accelerates evaporation from your skin. Conversely, if it creeps above 60%, the air becomes heavy and clammy, which also feels wrong. The sweet spot? Aim for around 50%.
Radiant heat loss is the silent killer.
This is where most homeowners lose the plot. You might have 19°C air in the center of the room. But if your windows are single-pane glass and your exterior walls are uninsulated concrete, those surfaces are likely hovering near 10°C or lower. Your body radiates heat toward those cold surfaces. Practical Steps to Regain Warmth
You do not need to buy a new boiler. You need to manage the environment. Here is how to fix the leaks in your comfort.
1. Balance the Moisture
Buy a hygrometer. They cost about the same as a cheap pair of socks. Check the reading.
* If it’s too dry: Place bowls of water near radiators. Use a humidifier. Moist air retains heat better and feels warmer on the skin.
* If it’s too damp: Use a dehumidifier. High humidity makes the air feel cold and heavy, promoting mold growth.
2. Seal the Air Leaks
Drafts are theft. Stop them.
* Install door snakes or weather stripping at the base of external doors.
* Check window seals. If the rubber is cracked, replace it.
* For older windows with poor seals, apply thermal window film. It’s a plastic sheet that creates an insulating air pocket. It looks cheap. It works surprisingly well.
3. Warm the Surfaces
You cannot heat the air instantly. You can heat the mass.
* Flooring: Bare wood or tile floors are cold conductors. Lay down thick rugs. They add thermal resistance (R-value) to your floor.
* Walls: If a sofa is pressed against a cold exterior wall, pull it out an inch. The air gap helps reduce the radiant cooling effect on your back.
* Windows: Heavy curtains block radiant heat loss. Close them at sunset.
4. Move the Air
Heat rises. It pools at the ceiling while you freeze at ankle level.
* Use a small fan to circulate air. Point it upward to push warm air down the walls, or horizontally to mix layers.
* A fan on a radiator helps distribute heat more evenly, preventing cold spots in corners.
5. Dress for the Activity
If you are sitting at a desk all day, your body is not generating much heat.
* Layer up. Wool socks. A fleece. A thermal base layer.
* Keep your extremities warm. Blood flow drops to hands and feet first when you are cold. Warm feet often mean a warmer body.
6. Keep Moving
Static is the enemy of warmth.
* Stand up every hour. Do some stretches. Walk to the kitchen.
* Muscle contraction generates heat. It is free. It is effective. It beats turning up the heating.
Is It Time to Raise the Thermostat?
Before you touch the dial, ask yourself: have I addressed the drafts? Is the humidity right? Are my windows sealed?
Increasing the thermostat from 19°C to 21°C does not just make the room warmer. It increases heat loss through walls and windows exponentially. You will pay for every degree of unnecessary warmth.
If you have done all the above—the rugs, the seals, the humidity check—and you are still cold, then maybe your metabolism is just slower. Maybe you are elderly. Maybe the insulation in your attic is shot. In that case, raise the temperature by one degree. Just one.
But don’t assume the thermostat is broken. Assume the physics are working against you. Fix the cold surfaces. Stop the drafts. Balance the air. You might find that 19°C feels like 21°C without spending a single extra cent on energy.
